George Drolsom

George Drolsom is one of the original founders of The Amelia. He began his racing career in college in the mid-50's when anyone could drive their sports car in the weekend races. As a professional race car driver, he had his first victory in international competition in 1966 when he won the GT Class during the final year of the Nassau Speedweek Race. The following year, he and Peter Gregg drove Gregg's 904 to second in class at the first 24 Hour Race at Daytona. He went on to win the Touring Class in the same race for four consecutive years, while simultaneously racing in the Can-Am. In 1975, Drolsom won the Porsche Cup for under 2.5 liter cars.

Drolsom supervises the entire field layout of the show that boasts over 200 classic cars from private collections that oftentimes haven't been seen in years. As the show has grown, Drolsom invented a color code system whereby the classic car owner is given a window sticker that corresponds to a field flag of the same color indicating where the car should be parked for the show.

"Many of our entrants have never been in the show before, and the field layout changes each year. The cars begin driving on the field in the dark just before sunrise, so parking your car in the right class can be bewildering," says Drolsom. "The color coding system eliminates confusion."

Today Drolsom divides his time between a home in Florida and a farm in Illinois, and he races vintage autos across the country.
